Maximizing Space In the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most action packed places in the home, since it provides food to the family, crucial for survival and nourishment. Most modern city homes are compact and space, a premium. Kitchens also become small and a bit difficult to manage. They are also used for storing crockery and cutlery, dried foodstuff, fresh foods, spices and condiments, refrigerators, dishwashers, cooking range and many small kitchen appliances crucial for many food related tasks.

But despite the lack of adequate space they can be functional and efficient working can continue. Part of this is due to the wide array of small kitchen appliances that make every chore easy to accomplish in the shortest possible time. The key to this lies in setting up and maintaining a well arranged kitchen, creating space for storage out of every inch of space, horizontally and vertically, and keeping the kitchen clear of a mess and never allowing extras to pile up. This can happen only if these are discarded regularly. Space maximization holds the key to an efficient kitchen, and if efforts are made to use all those things that can serve a dual purpose, then space constraints are minimized.

Ways to maximize space. Kitchen space can be maximized in many ways.

  • Throw away all the extras to make room for the most important small kitchen appliances, cooking utensils and equipment. Trying to de-clutter is one effective tool for creating space.
  • Clear the counter tops of things not in use everyday. This creates more working spaces and the kitchen does not look overcrowded. One way to clear the counters is by placing essentials like the microwave on a shelf just above the counter.
  • When floor space is less, use the vertical space available, that is, make shelves and cabinets till a higher level towards the ceiling, even if it means keeping a small ladder to reach them.
  • Place all small kitchen appliances close to electrical points so that they are convenient to plug in and do not have to be moved. One way to accomplish this is by making shelves in steps on the wall next to the electrical socket, and place all the appliances on them.
  • Similarly multiple shelf units inside cabinets can help in storing more than the regular straight lined shelves.
  • Opt for smaller shelves, smaller drawers and everything in a smaller size since any big pieces and additions will dwarf the already small kitchen.
  • Use space behind the door by adding narrow shelves that will be concealed by the door but can be used for keeping odds and ends
  • Clear up, clean up and put things back immediately after use. This helps to maintain order in the kitchen, and this will keep the kitchen look spacious despite its size

Small kitchen appliances add to the beauty of the kitchen as well. They hold the key to quick cooking without getting tired. Besides, their size goes well with smaller kitchens, which cannot store bigger appliances. Space constraints teach people how to use it wisely, especially in the kitchen where so much needs to be stored.
