How to Maximize the Most of Your Kitchen Space

There are small kitchens and then there are kitchens that are not so tiny but do have a premium on the countertop and storage space. Whether you have one of the former or one of the latter, there are ways that you get the most efficiency out of your kitchen space, starting with the best small appliances and organized in ways that make them easiest to use.

Only the Best, Only What You Use and No Single Use Items
Whether you are setting up your first house, moving into a smaller home or simply looking to downsize, you might be shocked at what you find when you take a very close and critical look at your small appliances. Your kitchen might be overpopulated by items that have grown a thick haze of dust because they are never used or there might be things on your shelves or your countertop that you do not really know how to use or even what they are. The first thing that you need to do to maximize your kitchen space is simple: get rid of anything that you do not use. Also on the get rid of list:

  • Anything that is broken or not working correctly
  • Anything that might be unsafe
  • All one-use items
You can only make fondue in a fondue pot, you can only make air popped popcorn in a popcorn maker, but you can do all of these things and more in a microwave oven, so why have three separate pieces when you can have one?

Round Things Up
Instead of having your microwave oven on one counter, your microwave cookware in another area and then small appliances here, there and everywhere in the room, it is best to put all of your appliances together in one easy to use space. If you can confine your kitchen appliances, you will not only maximize the available space but your time. Instead of going back and forth to get items, you will be in one space preparing meals or doing other kitchen tasks. Using a microwave stand or cart can be a good idea for this very purpose.

In addition to using a cart or stand, you can collect small items and accessories into decorative baskets for style and ease. If you would like, you can even color coordinate the baskets according to their use, with all of the coffee brewing items in one color, etc.

Store Occasional Use Things
Most people use their microwave oven frequently while other items are only used every now and then. Anything that is not used at least once or twice a week should be stored away so that you have more room to work with. Why have the food processor or the stand mixer on the countertop if you only use them once a month or even less frequently?

The more that you use a kitchen appliance, the more easily you should be able to access it. On the other hand, items that are limited in their usability or the times that you use them should be stored somewhere else. If you have never used these stored items after a year, it is time to finally let them go.
